Emerald Seas The rolling Palouse hills of Eastern Washington and North Idaho were formed by the dust blowing out the the central Washington State basin. Millions of years of collecting this dust created some of the most fertile wheat country in the nation. On one spring evening I was on top of Steptoe Butte in Whitman County Washington. Just before the sun went down behind the western horizon the warm yellow light evening sunlight was shining on the new wheat crop creating the shadows on the rolling waves of Emerald Seas.
